IDIA 619 Interactive Multimedia: Final Project

Summary of Overall Project - "The Advice Engine"
And Four Project Spinoffs - "The Mom Engine" "The Psychiatrist Engine" "The Oracle Engine" "The Fortune Teller Engine"

This is a variation of the "Planet Multimedia" Demo.
There are nine 500 square pixel swf files loaded into a 3 X 3 grid. Navigation is controlled by mouse movement.

There are four different swf file types; each is made of an image and a sound which can be activated by a mouse click. The sound for each image plays just once, so listen carefully.

The image types are: psychiatrists (represented by chairs sitting in neutral clinical settings), mothers, female oracles, and male fortune tellers. When the mouse is clicked, each image "speaks" a line of dialogue.

(Just for fun, I made individual advice "engines" for all of the types, so I could see an array for each.)

By relying upon a stock set of characters and dialogue that is combined randomly, the project took on a definite procedural rhetoric. Even though the images represent people who ostensibly address different aspects of the self (psyche; child; soul), what they actually say taps into similar sets of stock phrases.

By generating combinations of aphorisms and images randomly, the project tries to illustrate the commonality of advice types across different sources. So, if a given image or sound repeats within the project, it should not be seen as an anomaly, but as a demonstration of how similar advice can be given by different sources (or how different advice can be given by the same source).

The dialogue is original and was converted into mp3 audio files using the AT&T Labs Text-To-Speech (TTS) Tool. Images were culled from the web and were used in accordance with the educational "fair use" provision of copyright law. A commercial application of this project would need to use different images.

Each of the swf files can access one of ten possible images and one of ten possible sounds. Both the choice of image and choice of sound are chosen randomly for each swf. The swf files were loaded using the same document class files as those for the "Infinite Map" given in class:

the Cell & cellClass = Female Oracle
the Cell2 & cellClass2 = Male Fortune Teller
the Cell3 & cellClass3 = Mother
the Cell4 & cellClass4 = Psychiatrists
